Tombo Toffee® makes traditional toffee that's flavored in non-traditional ways. The company was founded in 2015 by Lisa Grantham and is based in Oakland, California. Our focus is on making the freshest and tastiest toffee available by using high quality, all-natural ingredients that are sourced as locally as possible.

"I wanted to take a traditional product, like toffee, and make it fresh and modern," says Lisa. "There's nothing more fun than watching a customer taste a flavor they weren't expecting and having them say that it's their new favorite."

What does the name mean?
Lisa's son, who was 8 at the time, came up with the name out of the blue -- he thought it sounded cool and it was fun to say. As it turns out, "tombo" is a Japanese word that means "dragonfly."  According to legend, Samurai warriors would place an image of a dragonfly on their arrow quivers when they went into battle because it was a symbol of strength, courage and determination. As a single mom embarking on this new venture the symbolism couldn't be more perfect. And what makes this story even more special is the fact that Lisa’s son’s name is Fletcher, which literally means "arrow maker."

Why toffee?
Lisa is well-known among friends and family as a great cook, always willing to try new things. On a bit of a whim, she decided to make toffee for a New Year's Eve party a couple of years ago and everyone loved it. Combining her creativity and analytical nature, Lisa experimented with dozens of variations over the course of a year until she came up with her signature recipes.

What is your favorite flavor?
When people ask us this question they always preface it with, "we know you probably love them all, but..." And it's true, we do love them all because each flavor is unique unto itself. That being said, our Rosemary toffee holds a special place in our heart because it was the very first flavor we created, and serves as the ongoing inspiration for what Tombo Toffee has become.

Where do you source your ingredients?
We work hard to buy high-quality ingredients because we believe it helps us create the highest quality product. Here's a list of our current specialty suppliers:
Oaktown Spice Shop
Schaad Family Almonds
The Guittard Chocolate Company
